Listening to my instinct saves the day

While driving our wonderful Hyundia Tuscon today I noticed that something didn’t seem quite right. I have loved this vehicle and the way it handles from the day we got it.  Today I was driving up a very steep hill in a very hilly city I noticed that something just didn’t feel right.  When I came to a stop light it felt like I had to work much harder than normal to get a response from my brakes.  I pulled into a parking lot and did a few test stops to see if it might just be my mind.  I texted my son, who had been driving the vehicle just before I took it, and asked if he noticed anything wrong.  No, he said, it seemed fine to him.  I pulled out into traffic and went a little further but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right so I pulled into another parking lot and texted my husband.  He asked me a few questions but didn’t seem terribly concerned.  I pulled out into traffic and went a little further but I still couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.  I pulled into another parking lot and told my husband I was waiting there for him.  When he arrived with a friend and checked out the situation they discovered that there was not one drop of brake fluid in the vehicle!  Later they discovered that there was a leak in the brake line.  Thank God I listened to my instinct and didn’t continue the hilly and curvy 20 minute drive home. Our friend is convinced we never would have made it without sailing into the trees somewhere along the way.

Parent’s Say The Weirdest Things

Remember the TV show “Kids Say the Darnedest Things“?  If you don’t remember the show and want a taste of it, check out this YouTube Video.  Newfoundland author, Tina Chaulk has started a new blog, Never Eat a Dinosaur, which proves that while kid’s may say the darnedest things, they also are the catalyst behind their parents often saying the weirdest things.

Tina was inspired to start the blog because of some of the weird things she has said to her children over the years and she invites other parents to join in the fun and share ridiculous things they have said, thanks to the antics of their children.  The blog, Never Eat a Dinosaur is worth checking out.  The posts are very short and to the point and they just may have you nodding in agreement, while at the same time chuckling in amusement, as you remember saying something similar.

During the month of May Tina is running a Never Eat a Dinosaur contest in which the winner will receive a $50 electronic gift certificate.  The winner will be randomly selected using Random.org and there are lots of simple ways to get your name in for the draw.  Some of the ways include liking her page on Facebook, following her tweets on twitter, retweeting her tweets.  Be sure to check out the contest page for details.

Skimming Google Reader Causes Confusion

I’ve been multi-tasking – taking in the Schoolhouse Expo while at the same time checking my email and google reader.  I skimmed the titles of the articles in CBC news category of my Google Reader and noticed these two headlines back to back:

Fabian Manning defends return to Senate

Senators re-sign Greening, Smith

I knew that Fabian Manning had been a senator in our Canadian Senate before he resigned his position to run for a district in our province in the recent federal election.  He was unsuccessful in his bid for the district and there were questions about what he would do now.  I hadn’t been following the news so wasn’t sure what had happened but quickly skimming the above headline I assumed he had returned to senate and there was probably some fuss about that.  I clicked on the heading and read the whole article and discovered I was right.

Moving on to the next heading I skimmed and missed the all important dash in the word “re-sign” so instead of reading “re-sign” I read “resign” and jumped to the conclusion that the two names after the word must be senators that had resigned to display their disgust at Manning returning to the senate.  Imagine my surprise when I clicked on the headline and read the article to find that the article was talking about hockey players re-signed to the Senators hockey team.

Lessons: skimming can cause confusion so be sure to read carefully.

Walking in the Morning

I am not a morning person.  Not at all.  But when I do get my butt up and get out and walk in the morning it feels good!

I did that this morning.  I set my iPhone to alarm at 6:50 and headed out the door around 7.  I wanted to get in a 30 minute walk before DH left for work.  I brought a Dave Ramsey podcast up on the iPod on my iPhone, put my ear plugs in, set the timer in the clock function on my phone for 15 minutes and set out.

It’s a beautiful day here this morning.  After having rain and even snow last week it is wonderful to see the sunshine and it felt wonderful to walk in the fresh air.

I wonder can I keep this up all week?

Double Posting Bad Idea

Blogger is up and running again but I’ve decided against double posting to both blogger and here.  After asking some advice from people that know about such things, I’ve decided that it would not be a good idea.

That said, however, I am not ready to give up either blogging platform.  I am enjoying learning the ropes here at word press.  I figure there’s nothing wrong with learning how to use both platforms well, so I am going to keep this blog here.

I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to use it yet but hopefully I will come up with a plan in the not too distant future.

I need to blog!

I made a pledge to myself that during the month of May I was going to post some kind of blog post every day.  Yesterday I couldn’t do that.  Not that I didn’t want to or try to, but I was blogging on blogger and when I went to post last night blogger was down!  I couldn’t get into my blog to post.  I was completely bummed.  I’ve been checking off and on all day today and it’s the same.  I decided that it was time to do something about it because I must blog!  :)

I knew I had tried out wordpress before but I didn’t know when or for how long or what my blog was called or anything.  Well, I discovered it when I tried to get a new wordpress blog.  My blogger blog is called Jacqueline’s Jabberings and I tried to get the same title for my wordpress blog.  That’s when I discovered that I had started a wordpress blog in 2006 with the Jacqueline’s Jabberings title.  I had completely forgotten about that blog and I can’t figure out how to get back into it!  I would have just picked up writing on that one if I could have but I couldn’t so that is why this blog is born.  If I ever figure out how to get back into the former one I may join them but we’ll see what happens with that.

If blogger ever gets up and running again I may double post in both blogger and here.  We’ll see what happens with that.  For now I’m enjoying the fact that I can blog again and I’m also enjoying relearning the wordpress platform.

That’s what on my mind today.
